Nourishing the Heart

There are some moments when you realize exactly how lucky you are. Right now, thinking back on this week, I am experiencing one of those moments.  Johnny is out with Milo, I’m nestled on the couch with a delicious cup of coffee (still in my pajamas at 11:00 am), listening to a soft salsa beat.  We just finished eating an amazing brunch that I concocted on a whim, the weather is gorgeous, and my heart feels light and loving.  I am happy. That phrase, so often used nonchalantly, really carries a lot of weight.  I realized long ago that being happy is not a constant state, that there are ups and downs to life, and that it somehow much harder for me to sit with the feeling of being happy than the opposite. Slowly, with the years, I’ve taught myself to relish the happy. To soak it in, to sit with it, and to realize–really realize–how good life is in that moment.  I had a great week — hanging out with amazing friends, enjoying food, wine, my family away from home, teaching, learning, and creating.  Little outward “homesteading” happened this week, but a lot of it happened on the inside. And I don’t feel bad about it at all. After all, if the home is where the heart is, then the heart needs to be nourished and cared for with just as much sentiment.  Happy Sunday, all. 🙂
