Our household, while rich in spirit, and love, and creativity, and joy, is what you would expect, wealthwise, out of a combined income of a grad student and an up and coming graphic designer (and a beagle that doesn’t nearly pull his considerable weight). So, when it comes to the whole topic of buying local and organic, we’ve deliberated, as anybody in our income bracket would do, over the virtues and costs. No doubt, we’ve discussed, is it better for the health of both the environment and our own bodily environment, but the monetary costs is, unfortunately, usually pretty prohibitive. At least compared to the mass grocery store, and at least when your grocery purchases are that of the usual relatively conscientious American.
However. When you start to play in the land of urban homesteading, diy lifestyle and buying more and more whole foods and less and less prepackaged, processed stuffs, you start looking at it a bit differently. And my lovely, brilliant partner is the one who threw out a completely new twist on the whole buying local-organic thing that ended up being the tipping point, and that is the idea of philanthropy. We’re both pretty giving people, who care about our community, and she decided for herself (and I agreed and took it for myself as well) that she would consider buying local as her token philanthropy. As long as she can swing it, money wise, she would pay the extra that local organic would cost, say at our local Citizens Co-op, and consider it her contribution to the community. Giving back. Doesn’t that sound great?
So that’s our little way of both giving back, and justifying even more spending what little moneys we have on being healthy and conscious. Cheers.
